Hey soon-to-be college grads! How’s life treating you this semester?

No, really. How are you? Are you all okay? Please tell me you haven’t given up entirely on that 8 a.m. class. Even with the days getting shorter and the nights getting colder, the grind must continue!

Speaking as someone set to graduate within two months’ time myself I can truly say I feel your pain. With the end of university life so closely within our grasp, our minds are undoubtedly filled with dreams of getting a full eight hours of sleep and eating three balanced meals in a day, rather than living off of coffee, coffee and more coffee.

But, alas, our fantasies of relaxing on the couch eating pancakes and scrolling through sad tweets of poor suckers going back to school this spring are not what reality has in store for us.

While there is the sweet relief of never writing another 10 page paper in one day or giving a class presentation, we now have to consider what comes next, the thing we have been training for since we could tell the difference between a dog and a cat; work.

Yes, work. The thing we always heard our parents complain about at the dinner table. The thing that always made mom late to pick you up from soccer practice. The thing we thought only had the three options of astronaut, rock star or teacher when we were seven. Work.

We have lived our entire lives listening to the adults around us gripe and moan about a crap job or a terrible boss. And now it’s our turn to join the club! Perks include financial independence and (sometimes) health care.

But what must come before work? Oh, right. Applying and waiting. . . And applying and waiting. . . And applying and waiting. . .

If you’ve been fortunate enough to detour the black hole of endless job applications then I commend you. Even if I am a bit jealous myself.

While the immediate future may seem a bit bleak, from what I’ve heard we will eventually figure it out. The path to success is bumpy to say the least. And although I can’t speak from experience, I’d like to think we’ve got a good chance at properly adulting someday.
